BE FREE, O MAN, BE FREE
From The Anti-Slavery Harp Compiled by William W. Brown Boston: Bela Marsh, 1848 ”Those are the same stars, and that is the same moon, that look down upon your brothers and sisters, and which they see as they look up to them, though they are ever so far away from us, and each other.“ ~Sojourner Truth I have been reading about Sojourner Truth. What an extraordinary woman! (see picture above) What horrors the institution of slavery imposed upon people and what resilient spirits to have endured and survived such tortures. First Day of 2011
From Oliver Sacks with love: 'NEW Year’s resolutions often have to do with eating more healthfully, going to the gym more, giving up sweets, losing weight — all admirable goals aimed at improving one’s physical health. Most people, though, do not realize that they can strengthen their brains in a similar way'. Shall we hope? Apparently, although some areas of our grey jello cells are hard-wired from birth, the brain has an astonishing ability to rebound from damage — even from something as devastating as the loss of sight or hearing.
Oliver Sacks writes that he sees this happen often with patients with neurological conditions.
His article titled "This Year Change Your Mind" published in today's New York Times is a fascinating read.
